Sensory Profile Caregiver Questionnaire

Autism is a neurological disorder that can be very complex to diagnose. It is one of the types of pervasive developmental delays and involves delays or deficits in communication and social skills, as well as more stereotyped patterns of behaviors or interests. However, there are other disorders that can cause a similar set of behaviors. For example, children with autism spectrum disorders are often diagnosed with ADHD first. Evaluations should distinguish between the Autism or Asperger's and ADHD.

An evaluation for autism requires looking beneath the surface behaviors, though, to look at what is driving or motivating the behaviors. It also requires looking at a pattern of behaviors that crosses all areas of development from birth. Knowing the framework for a thorough evaluation for autism can empower parents and other caregivers to make sure they get the best evaluation possible.

Who Can Diagnose Autism?

Autism is continuously being researched by the medical community. That research includes genetic differences and differences in brain function. While medical tests for autism are being developed, it is still an evaluation based on behaviors and abilities. Even with a single medical test, a behavioral evaluation would need to be done to provide a good profile of the individual strengths and weaknesses, including learning differences typical of autism, and to make recommendations.
