Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemna and Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, were both insightful and inspiring books which informed the popular documentary Food Inc.

In the documentary, Schlosser and Pollan counter the notion that there is a large number of independent farmers on widespanning, fields of green who provide the meat that you buy at the supermarket. In fact, the film points out that it is just four major meat corporations, Cargill, Tyson, National Beef and Swift, which own 80% of the entire meat market.

In an effort to meet the gargantuan demand for quick meat production, which can barely keep up with the American average consumption of 200 pounds a year per person, these meat companies have used the factory model to keep up and dominate their industry. In result, they've changed the way that their farmers raise livestock.
